They say there are criminals in Bihar, in Patna. Everywhere. They can come and kidnap you any time. They can rob you on gun point when you are passing dark streets alone. It’s a feared place. I was born there. I grew up there.
I saw the city of Patna after an year. The city greeted me with an auto strike. Buses won’t run at 10:30 in the chilling night when I left the packed train that brought me there. The only mode of public transport that was up and running was the manual rickshaw.
As a kid, I never minded traveling on rikshaws. It was no less than being a King. You pay money to a poor folk. He would drive the pedals and all three would drag on the bumpy roads. It was nice. As I grew up I started missing the glamor. I no more felt like a king. I started preferring walking. I still prefer walking. Some day when I grow old, I might again love riding rickshaws.
It was an almost lonely walk. The walk was long too, no less than eight kilometers. I feared no one. This was my city. My place. Not many shops are open after then thirty in a cold night in Patna. I went to the ones which were open and were selling fags. Smoking is a good company. In Deoghar, when with parents I don’t smoke, though I can because I feel like a kid there. I never feel alone there. I am so happy there. Everyone around loves you so much at home that you wonder what’s the need to step out and take all the shit the rest of the world has to offer to you.
Neelabh made the next day. We boozed in the night. We boozed late at night, sitting, or rather hiding in a friend’s godown that stank of rotting cum. The room was so much like a meeting place of dreaded road-chaap Bihari criminals, sitting together to celebrate the last loot and divide the money amongst themselves. We ate quite a bit too, chicken and mutton and litti and stuff like that. I ate so much that for the first time in my life I threw up on just two bottles of beer.
It was the first time I boozed in the city where I was born. And I will remember the night for a long time. Neelabh had taken a picture of mine on his cell, and if he is reading this post now, I would request him to mail it to me. This post is empty without that. And to those who have got used to see me without dresses these days, I am sorry. I am overdressed in that one.

Sparkling faces and red cheeks
Smiling lips, rusty Rusty eyes and golden streaks
People, friends, good men, better women
Talks and jokes, drama and fun now and then
I see the world
With the eyes of a blind soul
I stand aloof
Away from the rock-n-rol
Eternal sadness
Leaves me not
Unreadable, meaningless
Dash and dot
Dash and dot

I am not a Christian, neither are my parents. We also don’t have close christian friends who could invite us on X-mas. But over the years, the mere fact that it has always been a holiday on the 25th of December, has in some way pushed my family and myself to do something nice on the the day.
The whole idea of finding gifts below your pillow when you get up in the morning always appealed to my parents. Yesterday, my bro and myself indeed found our gifts. Thank you Santa!
Coming back to the question raised as the title of this post, Ankit and myself did a sweet and simple thing this Christmas and also made a two minute video to highlight the same.
I will leave Deoghar for Patna today to catch up with Neelabh who has already arrived in the capital of Bihar.
I will leave Patna on Friday to reach Chennai early Sunday morning. Any ideas for new year celebrations?

Bank holidays are limited. But whenever they are, dad loves taking out the bike or the van, and spending time with nature. Yesterday was one such day, and particularly special for him because his two sons were home.
We (add mom to the three characters introduced in the first para) went out, found a river, swam, ate food and had fun. Perfect holiday with sunshine in otherwise cold season. The video below captures that mood aptly.
Had I not injured my left knee while doing a 10k few days back, I would have run yesterday (as per the actual plan), all the way from home to wherever the river was.
The knee is healing slowly. And here’s a small tip to budding runners: running on sloped terrain fucks you way more easily than running on plain terrain; ask my knee! And do that in a cold morning to make sure you can’t run for three straight days.

The last time I had seen her, she was just born and I was yet to visit IIT Madras for the first time. The JEE results were out though, and technically speaking, I already was an IITian. Every new-born child’s face has always looked the same to me, and this was true in Disha’s case too.
All these four and a half years, most of which were spent at IIT, I neve got a chance to meet her again. So it was a delight to find her amongst everyone who had come to recieve me at the railway station. We fell in love the moment we saw each other, and were in awe of each other till she, along with her parents left for home yesterday.
Disha, I am gonna so much miss you for such a long time. I am sure that when you grow up, you will love this video. Others, you might love it already!
